MOON PALACE RESORT, CANCUN MEXICO

by - June 15, 2018

Oh Cancun, you will always hold a special place in my heart. Our first holiday abroad as a family of four.

We decided to book Moon Palace Resort through Virgin Holidays as a package deal. We spent a lot of time looking at different locations and types of holidays, we set our minds on Mexico and this resort was one of the most recommended. With small children who we knew would just want to spend their time in the pool, having everything in one location was really important to us. The hotel is split into 3 sections, The Grand, Nizuc and Sunsrise. Our room was located in the Nizuc section, you can use all the facilities on both the Nizuc and Sunrise parts of the hotel.

We landed in Cancun after a 10 hour flight (with an added 3 hour delay on the plane!!!) at 6:30pm and once we'd gone through immigration we went to collect our bags. We then went to find our transfer, we had decided to stick with the Virgin transfer that was included. So many people had told me to book a private taxi as the transfers included in package deals weren't any good. I can confirm this wasn't the case with us, ur coach was for Palace guests only and only went to the two hotels they have in Cancun, 15 mins once we boarded the coach we were at the hotel.

We arrived at the Moon Palace and were handed a cold towel, a flower and bottle of cold water our bags were then collected by the bell boy and we went to reception to check in. Check in was smooth and quick and we were then taken with our bags to our room. We were all exhausted by this point so ordered some room service and got an early night.
Each part of the hotel had its own lobby area, and they were so incredibly beautiful and grand. Every aspect was thought about in such detail and presented beautifully. There were 3 restaurants on the Nizuc side and 5 restaurants on the Sunrise side. We had the Italian, Mexican, Pan-Asian, Brazilian Steak House (twice) and the incredible buffet. The staff were exceptional every single one went up and beyond for you and they all did it with a smile on there face. We had a few waiters who made a big impact on our stay, even letting us sneak into breakfast as we were running late before our trip. They all work so long and hard and it really does make a difference.
We chose to stay in a Virgin Family Superior Deluxe Garden Club Room, this was a room that was aimed at families with children, so included children's products, children's food menus and a section for them in the mini fridge. We were expecting a garden view room on the ground floor but were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to our ocean view room. The room was a great size it came with two double beds, a Jacuzzi bath, large walk in shower, a filled and daily replenished mini bar, room service included and a good size balcony. The room came with hairdryer and straighteners, hair care and body care products.
Like I said the resort was split into three sections, you could walk from one to the other, sometimes it was nice to hop onto a golf buggy as it was so hot during the day, there were little bus stops dotted all around the complex so you didn't need to walk far to find one.
The gardens were beautifully presented and landscapers were working on them constantly to keep them looking perfect. There were gorgeous palm trees with fresh coconuts on, tropical flowers all over and eye catching water features all over. There were lots of iguanas, the kids loved spotting them on our walks and some of them weren't scared at all so they could get quite close and get a good look.
There were a huge amount of swimming pools to chose from, this was just two of the 5 on our side of the hotel, there were at least another 5 on the Sunrise section. Two pools from each side had swim up bars and none of the pools were deep enough that an adult couldn't walk in so having constant cocktails was never a problem. We spent hours of our days here and had a blast, Noah learnt to swim and Eva's confidence in the water hit a high. There were snack bars, ice cream carts and pizza ovens dotted around so you there was no need to get dry and dressed to go into the lobby area to eat. The area was so clean and the pool staff regularly came over and sifted any fallen leaves out of the pools.
The resort also boasted a good assortment of activities such as an incredible wave rider simulator which both the boys loved. Mini golf that the whole family could enjoy, bean bag throwing which we played for a good hour one day, all of the non motorised water sports were included and if the kids were older we would have definitely taken advantage of them. They had a whole day of activities you could join in with, the boys did the football one day but we spent most of our time swimming together in the pool. The evening entertainment was great, it's always a bit hit and miss I find but we went to three nights and we all enjoyed them all. The shows ranged from a fire show, break dancing, circus act and a Michael Jackson night (which was so much better than we anticipated).
These two had the most incredible trip, they had such a great time being free to just play and have fun with no strain of a routine. I hope they keep their bond and keep being the best of friends. We're going to plan lots of fun things for us to do over the summer so the rest of the year isn't a drag!
The only downside to the Moon Palace for me was the beach. It's covered in seaweed and there is no way you could swim in the sea. This is just one of those things, I read its something to do with the current pulling the seaweed into that part of the beach, but if your after a holiday that is focused on the beach this might not be the choice for you.

Other than that one tiny issue, I couldn't fault the resort in anyway. We had the most incredible and memorable experience, and will always remember our first holiday abroad as a family of four.
